How to Start a Running Comeback

I know it's been awhile.

I've said I wasn't ready physically.

I've said I wasn't ready mentally.

I've said I've just been ... worn out on being an injured runner.

I found other things to challenge me.

HIIT workouts.

Working with a trainer (I called it my weekly ass kicking).

Weight lifting.

I've let beautiful days to run come and go.

Today, however, I just coudn't let it pass me by.

51* and sunny in January. It was beautiful.

So, I grabbed Jeff and headed for the River Market.

It was a beautiful run. We didn't run anywhere particular. Hills, after being asked to charge up stairs (during my weekly ass kicking) were cake. Jeff was on his best behavior.

It wasn't a long run - about 25 minutes. I have no idea how far we ran. All I know is that it was fantastic ... and I was left wanting more.

Which, in my opinion, is the best way to start a comeback.

Weekly Workout Log

Back at it! Yeah ... Weekly Workout Logs!

Monday: Rest. Yes, I skipped on the running group. It was cold, folks. I see no point in running when it's cold if I'm not training for something.

Tuesday: LiveFit Day 1 (repeated) Chest and Triceps. Those tricep pulldowns get me every time. And those narrow pushups.

Wednesday: LiveFit Day 2 (repeated) Back and Biceps. By the time I'm done with this workout, my biceps are quivering. I feel so BA. (that's badass for you newbies)

Thursday: LiveFit Day 4 Shoulders and Abs. I skipped Day 3 because I knew I needed to hit a real gym, rather than my apartment complex fitness center to get good work in for legs day. My shoulders are wimpy. I was struggling on rear delt flys with 5 lb dumbbells. There is nothing more hilarious looking than a woman my size heaving and huffing with little 5 lb dumbbells. Yes, that was me, folks.

Friday: Date night with Ice Cream Guy. I made chicken, asparagus and sweet potato fries. Then we watched "Tangled". Super cute movie. Well done, Disney.

Saturday: It was my last ass-kicking with Andre. A bittersweet kind of day. Totally fitting however, because I was ready to smack him towards the end. Probably the best workout I've done with him. I may go back when marathon training starts because I just know I'll slack on my strength training with all that running.

That night I went to the Casino to celebrate ICG's Dad's birthday. I'm not much of a gambler, but eventually fed one of the slot machines a dollar. I doubled my money and then lost it all. Oh well.

Sunday: Definitely realized my workout with Andre was a good sub for the LiveFit legs workout. I may have been hobbling.

That's my week in workouts! Also worked on the diet. I have to admit, 5 egg whites with spinach and a bit of quinoa is a fantastic breakfast, and I love that I get to eat every 3 hours on this plan. There is an excellent recipe for Pumpkin Protein Bars on bodybuilding.com for anyone who is interested. They are tasty and super easy to make!

A Re-Introduction

I thought now was a good time to re-introduce myself to all those who are "outta the loop" ... or as I like to think of it ... a good time to highlight my blogging life over the last three years.

I originally started blogging on The Loop at RunnersWorld.com ... a wonderful community full of inspiration. My first blog "On the Bandwagon" told the story of how I got started running (it was peer pressure).

It was here that I met many of my running friends who lived all over the country. I met a handful of quirky Southern Californians, another group of Minnesotans, some weirdos from Michigan who run in all sorts of weather, people who run in costumes (yes, even marathons) and even some local runners who I met several times for a run on Saturday mornings - and that's just to name a few

I let everyone know how quirky I was and they answered with the same amount of quirkiness ... if not more. This group knows I've been both heartbroken and the heartbreaker. They know I bought an HD TV soley for the purpose of watching the Olympic Women's Marathon at 5 AM on a Saturday with my running buddies.

I shared my triumphs and my tragedies and my high hopes for a kick ass 2012. The Loop read along as I had training highs and lows ... and the lowest of the lows at racetime: 2 DNFs and 1 DNS. I've made my dog nearly more popular than myself with this crowd and I'm totally ok with that. I've been completely vulnerable and my vulnerableness was welcomed with open arms.

I went 'outta the loop' a few months ago ... thanks to their blogging software known as 'Pluck' (think of all the good puns you can get with a name like that), which is why I'm here, blogging under this name.

I've spent the last half of 2012 and the start of 2013 not running a whole lot, but rather working on strengthening my entire body so that I can stop being an injured runner and simply be a runner. It's been hard work, but I'm finally getting somewhere. Hospital Hill Run will be my comeback run, and I'm so excited to be an offical blogger and share my journey with the HHR community. I hope you enjoy the ride.

I'll do my best to tag relevant blogs with "Hospital Hill Run", but I tend to get a bit air-headed the busier I get ... so forgive me.

Until next time ...
love to all.

Weekly Workout Log

It's back!!!!
Woo-hoo!

Monday: It was January 7th (that's all I remember).

Tuesday: It was January 8th.

Wednesday: Day 1 of Jamie Eason's Live Fit Trainer (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/jamie-eason-livefit-trainer.html). This was a chest and tricep day. The best part about this program is that you can print off logs for each workout and track things as you go.
The most difficult set of this day: narrow pushups

Thursday: Day 2 of Live Fit Trainer. Back and biceps. I realized my little apartment fitness center wasn't going to make the cut with this program. I did the best I could, but it's hard to do exercises like preacher curls without the right equipment.
The most difficult set of the day: standing biceps cable curl. My arms were dead & it took a lot of concentration to keep doing this exercise properly.

Friday: Day 3 of Live Fit Trainer. Aaaaahhhh! I really do need a gym membership! Made the best of it and came out with a pretty good workout.
The most difficult set of the day: seated leg curl. I had to make do with an on the stomach leg curl and man those were a killer.

Saturday: a marathon day of driving to Des Moines, wedding dress shopping with my BFF from high school (she found the dress!) and driving back. By 7 pm, I hit a wall and just wanted to go to bed. Fell asleep watching "The Graduate" with ICG, who had never seen it (WHAT!??!?! ... I know, folks, I know ....).

Sunday: Decided to start week 1 of the trainer over since I slacked on the diet plan, so I went grocery shopping, cleaned and did laundry instead. Made a video blog with a very special announcement that I hope to get uploaded this afternoon.

I just had to share

I don't follow many blogs on this domain; not for any particular reason other that I still choose to spend my blog-reading time on the Loop at runnersworld.com, where I met so many wonderful people.

One of the blogs I follow is by this wonderfully talented writer named Meg, who is insanely honest on her blog - it's probably the main reason I follow her. She wrote this post recently, which I literally just read and instantly wanted to share with you:

i own jeans now. (in more than one color, even).

before beginning:
this is a continuation.
of a story. about my nasty,
little eating disorder.
check the sidebar
{FOOD AND HEALTH}
for the whole grizzly saga.

i've been thinking about how i wrote this post nearly three years ago. four years without owning a pair of jeans. which was really five. or six.

and then after that, came this.

jeans and pants: the eating disorder's worst fear and largest enemy.

so here's what i want to say:

i have one pair of boot-cut-jeans that i've owned since my second year of college (they've now reached vintage-esque status). i occasionally pull them out because they fit now and they really do look damn fine with cowboy boots.

i have a plum pair of skinny-jeans (cotton pants) from ny&co that always makes me feel more petite than i actually am (i like to wear them on dates). i have the same jeans (pants) in bright blue and while they aren't as forgiving, i've never wore anything more then i wore them last spring.

when i visited home last August i got two pairs of classic jeans. one was a twelve dollar pair from the banana repulic outlet store and they may very well be my favorite pair of pants (jeans) ever.

i own black corduroy pants. and gray ones too. i love them. (black corduroy pants can be worn with anything and dressed up or down--i can recommend nothing more).

i even have like three black stretchy exercise pants that cling to the curve of my but. and somedays i love them. and somedays i don't. but i have them. and i wear them. (in public, even).

i don't say all this to brag. to parade out a laundry list of pants so you can see just how many i have. (in my defense, i 1. never throw anything away and 2. am making up for a lot of lost time {four or five or six years}).

it's to say this: it gets better. life continues on and it gets better--and sometimes you have to fight for it to get better and sometimes you just have to wait for it to, and it's not always easy to know the difference, but there is one.

i went about six years without wearing pants. so deeply did i loathe my thighs and wide hips and large bottom.

and now i hardly wear anything else.

and the move from no-pants to pants was brought to you by relatively normal eating. no diet. no restriction. no ban on hamburgers or doughnuts or twizzlers. it was the product of exercise and vegetables and experimentation and a hell of a lot of patience.

honestly, it was the product of saying, my worth is not tied to how i look it jeans. i am worthy. period. and so i'll wear pants if i damn well want to.

i will choose to feed my body because i love it. i will not starve it into submission or starve it in pursuit of an industry's narrow-minded beauty ideal.

so at the start of the new year when we're all inundated by diet ads and weight-loss programs, i thought i'd offer up this little testimonial instead. just something to chew on.

(oh! and i did it by drinking as many lattes as i wanted. because i love them. and find them deeply comforting. and they bring a certain sort of happiness that i never want to deny myself). so there.

T-Minus 51 Days

A few posts ago, I declared that 'you' would be able to bounce a quarter off of my ass by the time I'm 30.

Seriously, why do I declare things like that when I'm on a soapbox??

Perhaps the more pressing question, is do I intend on following through with this promise?

Hell yeah I do.

So, I did a quick Google search to find out how many days until my 30th birthday.
Incidentally, I found this:

http://roadtothepinkbikini.blogspot.com/
I fully intend on reading this woman's blog, as I'm sure it's chock full of inspiration. She's going to wear a pink bikini and ice cream guy has agreed to [attempt to] bounce the quarter off of my ass on the same day. It's like we are kindred spirits.

My time with Andre at F3 Fitness is drawing to a close ... for the time being. So, my next plan is to work out with Jamie Eason. Thanks to former Loopster ber94, who pinned this yesterday, I'm now signed up for a free 12-week LiveFit Trainer program on bodybuilding.com. Here's hoping I stick to it.

And maybe I'll join in on this pink bikini day thing. Except mine is purple. That's allowed, right?
